Tirupati, the abode of Lord Venkateshwara gets energy efficient LED street lighting.
by ISLE KSC - Tuesday, 27 July 2010, 09:02 AM

The City of Tirupati, population 250,821, is located in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, India at the foothills of Eastern Ghats. Tirupati is a major economical and educational hub in the southern region of the state. The city is famous for the Venkateswara Swamy temple dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, which is located about 10 km north west of Tirupati in the hallowed Tirumala hills. One of the most important pilgrimage centers in India, the temple draws millions of pilgrims and is one of the busiest pilgrimage centers in the world. Tirupati has several additional temples and is famous for its red wooden toys, copper and brass idols. Tirupati is almost equidistant from the state capital cities of Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai.

About LED City
The LED City is an expanding community of government and industry parties working to evaluate, deploy and promote LED lighting technology across the full range of municipal infrastructure to:

-- Save energy
-- Protect the environment
-- Reduce maintenance costs
-- Provide better light quality for improved visibility and safety.

About 22 percent of electricity is used lighting. In a world with soaring energy prices based on the availability and control of fossil fuels, and with growing concern about sustainability of the environment, a revolution in lighting is long overdue.

Serious consideration has to be given to focus on a change in the lighting design system to cater to the requirements of the pedestrians, which is only getting a secondary attention with the present design practice. The motorist does neither need high lighting levels nor lighting from the tall masts with high powered lights. With LEDs we should be able to revert to provide edge, divider and lane marker lighting and provide illumination without obstruction of the trees in the pedestrian area. The lighting power requirement goes down to about a third what we are using today for lighting the street, neglecting the requirements of the pedestrian. The pedestrian area gets lit from the spill light or as a incidental fallout of the street lighting. The pedestrian area lighting is affected by the dark spots due to trees etc., when lighted with the present designs with tall poles.

"Devendra Talkies and Tilak represent two of our city's most highly trafficked roads, making proper illumination is essential," according to Shri.P.Mohan Reddy, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation of Tirupati. "With thousands of people enjoying our city each day, LED lighting provided a way to reduce costs associated with the energy use and maintenance of illuminated roadways." Tirupati temple tops and leads any other place of worship in the world in terms of the offerings from its devotees.

The scheme completed now has 72 Watt LED street lights and estimates energy savings of more than 70 percent compared to traditional sodium vapor street lighting. Tirupati Municipal Corporation estimates a monthly savings of 6,187 units of electricity, which is equivalent to 288,000 Indian Rupees annually.

More and more cities are planning to revamp their city lighting systems under the JNNURM program sponsored by the central government and it is time to provide effective lighting for the pedestrian area and without sacrificing the need of the vehicular traffic. Added advantage would be the reduction in energy demand by 50% to 60%. Our power systems also have acute peak shortage and with this change, would be benefited.

Fluorescent Lamp/Tube --- Waste Disposal, Recycling, Pollution
by ISLE KSC - Thursday, 15 July 2010, 12:13 PM

ISLE has been expressing concern about the proliferation of Fluorescent Lamps, both TFL (Tubular) and CFL (Compact) and the lack of proper disposal system for them at the end of their life.

We cannot afford to ignore the need to change that is taking place from the aspect of energy conservation and carbon emission.

ISLE Silver Jubilee Lecture by Behr Champana on July 10, 2010 at Century Club at 1800 hrs

Abstract of the ISLE-KSC Silver Jubilee Lecture.
Many of the world great modern developments and future of architecture  may or may not apply or be relevant to the Indian Subcontinent and to future growth in India. Issues for India are different. The lecture will focus on what should guide Indian government, developers, contractors,  architects, planners, designers, engineers,etc..in a sensible approach. The sensibilities of the diverse regional  Indian cultural heritage, their socio-economic factors, and how not to focus just on sustainable developments, but stress the need to grow sustainable "human" developments to educate and ensure the creation of a new generation with an "inherent will" to protect the resources, environment, the rich knowledge & educational talent pool etc., based on Indian traditions for all future generations to enjoy.

The Program had very good attendance with over 200 Architects, about 50 engineers and about 15 real estate developers. The Chief Guest of the program was Shri K.Jairaj, the Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Karnataka. Chairman IIA, Karnataka Shri K.Jaisim and Chairman ISLE, Karnataka Shri MSN Swamy chaired the program.

Shri Behr Champana quoted statistics and gave his analysis of the issues of developments and how the requirements differ from one country to another or even from one region to another due to cultural, religious, climatic, political and economic factors, taking examples from around the world. The presentation was supported with brief case studies of some development initiatives which succeeded,  and many which have boomeranged. Deriving from the presentation he gave a few suggestions about the factors that Indian professionals - Architects and Engineers - should apply these factors to influence development. He highlighted the differences in the decision process between countries like UAE, China on one hand and in the democratic countries like India.

Another important highlight was his analysis on the manner in which India has come out unscathed from the global recession, due its non-dependance entirely on the developed world market.

Shri Jairaj, Additional Chief Secretary to the Government, gave the developmental picture in the state & highlighted the unparalled strides taken by Karnataka in the field of power and in particular the renewable sources. He appreciated the move of joint initiative from the IIA & ISLE. He gave the statistics of the development in Wind energy, Biomass, Micro Hydel. Now efforts are on to step up the development of SPV systems, with focus on the arid areas of Karnataka. The statistics about the solar heating systems was something not well known and the participants were thrilled to know that Bangalore has the distinction of having the largest area of solar water heating collectors among all the cities in the world.

Earlier it had been mentioned by Shri Bhavani Prasad that ISLE & IIA have taken the initial steps to form an apex association of all professionals, such as Architects, Structural Engineers, Electrical, Air-Conditioning, Plumbing, Fire protection, Horticulture & Landscaping professionals, who have to join together for improving the built environment. Prof.Jaisim mentioned that in February the first step of an event with Structural Engineering World Congress had been successful and that this is the second step with the lighting professionals. We would look forward to have similar activities with professionals of HVAC, Plumbing, Fire & Landscaping in the very near future.
